What happened to Mike Bell, according to WFAA in Dallas, should remind everybody how important it is to see your doctor on a regular basis.

Bell was at work one day, when his boss came up to him and told him that he didn't look good and that he should go to a doctor. So he did. It was a good thing, too, because it turns out he had a tooth infection that had spread through his blood to his heart. "Without prompt intervention, he would have died within a few hours," said Dr. Mark Pool, Bell's cardiac surgeon. "We can see that the blood moves normally out of the heart, but then goes the wrong direction back into the heart, and that signifies severe leakage of the valve."

WFAA's January 2016 story noted that this type of thing is not so rare, and that tooth infections are not something people should ignore. As for Bell, he recovered from his open heart surgery and is doing OK. But he feels very lucky that somebody intervened in time to save his life. "I don't want my kid burying me," he said. "I want to be with my family. I'm fortunate enough to be able to be here."
