On May 31, a toddler will become the newest member of the New York City Fire Department. The boy, Trucker Dukes,3, will be sworn in by FDNY Commissioner Daniel Nigro during an official ceremony, the Huffington Post reported. Trucker, who hails from Hawaii, is living in New York while he receives treatment for his stage IV cancer. He dreams of becoming a firefighter and visits his local New York fire station often.

Trucker has become friends with many of his local firefighters. One of Trucker’s best firefighter friends is FDNY Captain Jim Grismer. Grismer met Trucker after responding to a call at the local Ronald McDonald house where they were staying while Trucker received treatment for his cancer. Grismer said of the meeting to the Huffington Post, “I see this little boy excitedly walking towards me with his eyes aglow. I opened my arms and he basically climbed up and hugged me around the neck,” Grismer said. “It was as if we’ve been friends/brothers for years.”

After Trucker’s mom shared a picture of Grismer hugging Trucker tightly at a fire station to Trucker’s Facebook page, Commissioner Nigro’s staff decided to make Trucker an honorary firefighter.  “This honor is so special to us because Trucker-Boy really thinks he’s a fireman,” Trucker’s mom, Shauna Dukes, said to the Huffington Post. “We are so blessed to have been adopted by the FDNY.”

Trucker's love of all things fire department was sparked by his father, Joshua Dukes, who is a firefighter in Maui.
