Giant Panda gives birth to twins
Cameras were rolling as Lun Lun, a giant panda at Zoo Atlanta gave birth to twins. In this remarkable clip, viewers have the rare chance to see what happens moments after a panda bear is born. Lun Lun delivers her first baby and immediately picks up the crying cub in her mouth and brings it closer to her body.
Moments later, a second cub is born. However, the mother is slower to react, but does eventually move her attention toward the crying cub. In an article by Zoo Atlanta, it is not uncommon for giant panda's to give birth to twins, however, it is unlikely for both to survive without assistance from outside care.
The Animal Management and Veterinary Teams at Zoo Atlanta are helping Lun Lun by offering care to one of the cubs as she nurtures the other. Over time, they may switch out the cubs so that they can both receive care from their mother. However, because the cubs are born so small, they are at especially high risk for mortality. A plan will be devised based on the needs of the mother and the cubs.
These particular cubs are the fourth and fifth to be born at Zoo Atlanta. While there are fewer than 1,600 pandas living worldwide, Zoo Atlanta is committed to providing financial support for the specifies. In fact, they were awarded the International Conservation Award from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums for their passion and commitment to pandas.
