If you thought finding a Pokémon with the perfect Nature and IVs* was hard, try looking for shinies. It's a monster of a task, made only for the most hardened of players. Most Pokémon lovers will be content finding one or two shinies by pure chance throughout their entire lives, and won't bother looking for more.

But if you're really intent on putting yourself through the torture of shiny hunting, we've got a little tip on how to do it – and which specific Pokémon you should try to obtain for that extra coolness factor.

First things first – if you're looking for shiny Pokémon, you'll need the Shiny Charm item. You'll obtain the item by fully completing the National Pokédex in the recent games – Pokémon Black 2 and White 2, Pokémon X and Y, and Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. If in your bag, the Charm will increase the odds of running into a Shiny Pokémon from 1 in 4,096 to 1 in 1,365.3, according to Serebii. A significant shift, but still a daunting task. Additional techniques listed by IGN involve breeding two Pokémon from different languages together, or chain fishing, which involves constantly fishing in the same spot until a shiny Pokémon appears.

Now – fewer technicalities, more pictures. Here's a list of the 10 best-looking shiny Pokémon, in our opinion.

10. Ho-Oh

Something about that shift to a pure gold color instead of its usual red makes Shiny Ho-Oh a sight to behold. Of course, getting a shiny legendary is no easy task – but that's what makes it even more valuable.

9. Ninetales As you've realized by now, most of the best shiny Pokémon out there go through a rather drastic color swap – and Ninetales is no different. Does anyone see a resemblance to the newly announced Alolan Ninetales, from the upcoming Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon? Interesting...

8. Metagross Metagross's silver-and-gold look is not only resplendent, it also makes the Pokémon look that much stronger. A Shiny Beldum was distributed as an event Pokémon when Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire were first released, leading to a widespread increase in popularity for this ironclad shiny.

7. Honchkrow The colors, the plumed hat-like appearance of Honchkrow's head... Are you thinking what we're thinking? Totally.

6. Greninja Greninja became even more well-liked than it already was after its reveal as a playable character in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS. And if regular Greninja wasn't cool enough, its black-and-red look will definitely win you over.

5. Ponyta Everyone knows there's nothing cooler than blue flames, and Shiny Ponyta makes excellent use of them. Tragically, Ponyta's evolution Rapidash loses the blue flames after evolving, making this a bit of a one-trick pony.

4. Umbreon Speaking of blue, how cool are the blue rings all over Shiny Umbreon's body? Umbreon knows how to look good without being too over-the-top about it.

3. Rayquaza Like shiny Metagross before it, Shiny Rayquaza was put on the map by being distributed as an event Pokémon fairly recently. Its new look sheds its trademark emerald color for a darker, more intimidating appearance.

2. Charizard Charizard's shiny color palette is awe-worthy. Black and red make for a powerful, in-your-face color combination that gives Charizard a real intense look. The look was so popular with fans, it inspired Pokémon X's Mega Charizard appearance. With blue flames for added awesomeness!

1. Gyarados When most gamers think of Pokémon with unusual colors, they immediately remember Red Gyarados, the specimen that introduced shinies way back in Pokémon Gold and Pokémon Silver by appearing in the main plot. Red Gyarados is considered by many to be akin to a legendary Pokémon – one-of-a-kind yet easily accessible to every player with a copy of the game – and it inspired millions of trainers to begin their quest to find more unique-looking Pokémon.
