Traditionally, traffic stops are some of the most dangerous spots in a busy city. Pedestrians who don't pay close attention to their surroundings, notably crosswalk lights, are vulnerable to getting hurt from oncoming traffic. Couple this with the fact that most people are impatient when it comes to navigating city streets, and you've got an issue that is in need of a solution.

What if you could keep pedestrians entertained while they wait for crosswalk lights to shift? That's exactly what smart did when they developed the dancing traffic light manikin in Lisbon, Portugal. Located near the traffic light is a booth where people can put their dance moves on display. Those moves are then mimicked by the manikin at the crosswalk, which in turn helps captivate impatient pedestrians.

The company reported that after implementing the dancing traffic light, 81% more people stopped at the red light.
