You may have seen wax versions of food on display at Japanese restaurants. High quality versions are visually indistinguishable from real food. I remember thinking they were real food coated with some kind of preservative. In reality, they are finely crafted wax sculptures.

The practice first began in Gujo town in Gifu prefecture and is now common all over Japan. In this video, a man demonstrates how he makes a perfect head of cabbage. Tourists can also try their hand at making wax foods.
