Emmanuel Kelly was abandoned as a baby in war-torn Iraq, but he refuses to back down in the face of adversity.

As his audition for the 2011 season of "The X Factor Australia," Kelly sang a heartfelt rendition of John Lennon's "Imagine," but the emotionally-charged song was given even more power when Kelly shared his tumultuous past. According to his pre-audition interview, Kelly and his brother Ahmed were abandoned as babies in a war zone in Iraq, left to die in a shoe box and suffering from physical deformities due to chemical warfare. Kelly's website attributes the boys' survival to nuns from the Mother Teresa Orphanage in Baghdad who took the helpless infants in and humanitarian Moira Kelly, who brought them to Australia for life-changing surgery before adopting them.
Kelly's moving performance touched more than those in attendance. On Imagine Peace, Yoko Ono sent a message of gratitude to the singer: “Thank you, Emmanuel. You sang beautifully! Thank you. John would have been proud of you. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Love, Yoko."
