Tarek El Moussa and his wife Christina El Moussa host HGTV's "Flip or Flop," a show that follows the couple as they buy homes, remodel them, and then put them on the market. The El Moussa family received a shocking wake-up call in 2013 when a registered nurse was watching a marathon of the show and noticed an abnormal nodule on Tarek's throat.

The viewer, nurse Ryan Read, immediately emailed the production company, voicing her concern and urging Tarek to go see a doctor. According to People, Tarek knew something was going on because he had been experiencing trouble swallowing and had noticed the lump increasing in size.

The below video details Tarek's dramatic visit to the doctor and the events following. His wife Christina describes the feeling of intense anxiety as what was supposed to be an hour-and-a-half surgical procedure turned into a four-hour operation. Tarek had thyroid cancer and the lump was removed in its entirety.

The last few years have been far from easy for the El Moussa family. While the couple still stars in "Flip or Flop," their family has had to make major adjustments in the midst of Tarek's battle against cancer.

A recent article from People explains that Tarek is now in remission and that the couple recently welcomed their second child.
