"Girl Meets World" star Rowan Blanchard is facing backlash after announcing she identifies as queer, with negative feedback coming from across the Internet after an initial wave of positive responses to her bravery and outspoken declaration.
On Jan. 16, 2016, while replying to fans via Twitter, Blanchard, 14, revealed that she is "open to liking any gender in future is why I identify as queer." A little later, she posted "like I thought I was being brave and was proud of myself and then everyone attacks me."

"Girl Meets World" is a spinoff of the 1990s ABC comedy "Boy Meets World" starring Ben Savage as a teenage boy seeking to find his way in the world. Savage plays Blanchard's father in "Girl Meets World," which has aired on the Disney Channel since 2014.

The Daily Beast, though, was one of the first to jump on the Blanchard bandwagon, suggesting that the Disney Channel follow her lead and incorporate gay themes into its programming.

"It's incredibly exciting that Rowan Blanchard came out — and that the inspiring young actress will be putting pressure on Disney to have her character follow suit," wrote The Daily Beast's Nico Lang. "But what's most inspiring is that gay teens are doing the same every day, coming out on their Twitter and Facebook accounts to their friends and family. These courageous youth deserve to see a girl like them on every TV in America."
