Dogs have an amazing sense of smell. According to, their sense of smell is at least 100 times better than a human's. Even though we know dogs have sensitive noses, it’s still shocking to hear about exactly what those noses can pick up. For example, a Labrador in Pleasant Grove, UT, was able to sense that his owner was experiencing a drop in blood sugar from miles away.

The Labrador, Hero, is a trained diabetic alert dog who takes care of Sadie, a little girl who has Down syndrome and  diabetes. According to a KUTV report, one day while Sadie was at school Hero started whining and pawing Sadie’s parents. "He's normally a very quiet dog. Whining is not in his protocol. But he just started whining and he would not stop," Michelle, Sadie’s mom said to KUTV.

Because Hero wouldn’t stop whining, Michelle contacted her daughter's school just in case. Sadie’s teacher tested her blood sugar, but her numbers were fine. However, the teacher kept monitoring her, and an hour later, Sadie’s blood sugar had dropped to a dangerously low level. Hero’s alert helped save Sadie.

Sadie's parents said that they don’t really know how Hero knew that Sadie’s blood pressure was dropping, but they have just learned to roll with it. "I can't explain it,” they said. “It's a God thing. I think it's like mother's intuition. These dogs have abilities and senses beyond our understanding."
