4-year-old cancer patient 'marries' nurse in wedding thrown by hospital
A 4-year-old girl with cancer “married” her 29-year-old nurse recently. Abby Sayles has been battling leukemia for the past year. She receives chemotherapy treatment at the Melodies Center for Childhood Cancer and Blood Disorders at Albany Medical Center, according to Times Union. During the time that Abby has been treated at the medical center, a male nurse, Matt Hickling, has been a fixture in her life. Abby grew so fond of Matt that one day she told her mom, Renee, that she was going to ask Matt to marry her.
Renee told Matt what was going to happen. “I sent him a text message just to give him a heads up that this was an idea that was in her head, just so he was not in shock,” Sayles told WTEN according to KTLA. When Abby asked Matt to marry her one day, Matt, who has also grown fond of Abby, said “yes” to her proposal.
The pair were “married” at the medical center. The ceremony was held in a room in the medical center. Medical center staff put down rose petals for Abby to walk on as she walked down the aisle to her future “husband” Matt, who was waiting on her wearing a tuxedo T-shirt according to Times Union. Abby wore a white dress and carried a bouquet of roses.
After the ceremony, Abby was elated. KTLA reports that a reporter asked her if she was excited about her new marriage. Abby said, “Yeah! This is my first time to be married!”
A video of the ceremony, that another nurse, Lori Ciafardoni Renee posted on Facebook went viral. It had more than 13 million views, according to Times Union.
